The Personnel Security & Suitability section is responsible for the administration of personnel security clearances, ongoing employment suitability screening, and integrity intelligence matters. The section works closely with all divisions in the Department and ABF, and interacts with external Commonwealth, law enforcement, and exempt agencies.

Duties and responsibilities

 

Under limited guidance, the Assistant Director - Personnel Security & Suitability will:

 

  • Lead a team of security clearance management / suitability assessors
  • Interpret and implement the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) for Personnel Security
  • Triage and assess Declarable Circumstances, SES Declarations, Conflicts of Interest and Outside Employment Applications for all departmental staff
  • Provide support to the Director Personnel Security & Suitability, including but not limited to, recording critical decision records, Senior Executive Service briefings and other executive correspondence, as required
  • Undertake and participate in continuous improvement activities relating to the Personnel Security within I&PS, including; developing, reviewing, evaluating and implementing relevant policies, procedures, processes, tools and best practices
  • Lead and exemplify a healthy and safe working environment, modelling and promoting ethical behaviour and practices consistent with the APS Code of Conduct.

 

Additional information

 

Desirable:

 

  • Certificate IV in Government Security (Personnel Vetting) or Certificate IV in Government Investigations or relevant qualifications
  • Obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check
  • Obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 1 security clearance, and willingness to upgrade if required
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain the highest levels of ethics and accountability to ensure the professionalism of Integrity and Professional Standards.

Eligibility

 

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

 

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
 

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
     

In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
