About our role
As an EL1 Border Force Inspector in Operation AEGIS, you will play a critical leadership role in ensuring the security and safety of Australia’s borders through leading compliance and enforcement activities. Operation AEGIS works closely with law enforcement partners, including the Australian Federal Police (AFP), to monitor and enforce visa and community safety conditions for individuals under the Bridging (Removal Pending) visa. Your leadership will be essential in guiding teams, making strategic decisions, and ensuring operational effectiveness in this high-impact role.
You will be part of a leadership team dedicated to enforcing critical compliance measures related to the Bridging (Removal Pending) visa cohort, as well as community supervision orders that mandate strict behaviour and reporting protocols. With a mission-focused mindset, you will work on the ground and in coordination with key agencies, including the AFP and state and territory police, to monitor and enforce community safety standards.

Leading a team responsible for managing technical support for Electronic Monitoring Devices, and 24/7 monitoring teams, our ideal candidate will:
- Proven Leadership Skills: Demonstrated experience in leading, managing, supervising, coaching, and developing teams, with a focus on performance improvement and career progression
- Analytical and Decision-Making Ability: Strong judgment and analytical skills to assess compliance risks, make informed decisions, and uphold public safety standards
- Adaptability and Resilience: Ability to respond effectively to evolving operational demands in high-pressure settings
- Effective Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build and sustain productive working relationships with internal teams, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders to achieve shared objectives.
Duties and responsibilities
In this leadership role, you will lead and manage a specialised team within one of three operational sections of Operation AEGIS, each with distinct responsibilities that contribute to national security. Depending on your Section, your primary duties will include:
1. Regional Compliance and Enforcement (RCE)
- Leadership and Supervision: Lead a team responsible for managing technical support for Electronic Monitoring Devices (EMDs), EMD applications and removals, conducting field compliance checks, and overseeing stakeholder engagement with law enforcement agencies
- Compliance Enforcement: Lead and supervise proactive field inspections and compliance activities, ensuring visa and behaviour-related conditions are adhered to by individuals within the BVR cohort
- Stakeholder Management: Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with AFP, state and territory police, and other external partners, coordinating joint compliance activities
- Risk Assessment and Court Support: Conduct risk assessments, manage responses to compliance breaches, and represent the ABF in court as needed, ensuring comprehensive documentation for legal proceedings.
2. National Monitoring and Investigations
- Team Supervision: Manage and lead the 24/7 monitoring team, managing operational priorities, incident response, and compliance monitoring across national systems
- Investigation and Incident Reporting: Manage and support investigative activities, including risk assessments and data analysis, referring identified breaches of the Migration Act 1958 to the AFP
- Strategic Data Analysis: Lead data gathering and analysis to detect non-compliance patterns, optimise enforcement strategies, and ensure risk mitigation
- Operational Readiness: Ensure continuous, efficient monitoring of individuals under community supervision, maintaining readiness to respond to incidents impacting public safety.
3. Operational Support & Electronic Monitoring Device Technical Management
- Governance and Procedural Oversight: Develop and review policies, governance frameworks, and standard operating procedures to maintain consistency and compliance within Operation AEGIS activities
- Resource and Contract Management: Manage contracts, inventory, and procurement related to EMDs and other operational equipment, optimising resource allocation to meet demands
- Training and Capability Development: Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and continuous professional development of team members, ensuring alignment with ABF operational requirements
- Quality Assurance and Financial Oversight: Manage and conduct regular audits, quality checks, and risk assessments, and manage budgetary and invoice-related matters to maintain fiscal accountability.
Additional information
To be eligible for this role, you must meet the following criteria:
- You must be an Australian citizen
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline or Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance as applicable
- Meet and sustain medical, fitness, and psychometric standards essential for ABF operations. You will also be required to subscribe to the ABF Oath or Affirmation
- Wear ABF uniform in accordance with dress standards (unless the position requires wearing of business attire).
For some roles, you will also be required to:
- Acquire a Working with Children Check (required for specific roles)
- Complete Operational Safety Training and willing to carry and use personal defence equipment, including a firearm, if required
- Work outside of business hours including weekends (overtime or shift work required for some roles)
- Certificate IV in Government Investigations (required for specific roles).
Additional Desirable Experience:
- Understanding of ABF Operation AEGIS roles, responsibilities, and links throughout the ABF, the Department and broader Government
- Familiarity with electronic monitoring and experience in fields such as compliance, investigations, detention, contract management, risk assessment, or governance is highly regarded.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
