The ABF is responsible:

  • For all operational border related activities, including the management of travellers, goods, cargo and onshore compliance, detention and removal operations

  • The end-to-end management of the immigration detention network, ensuring the security, safety and welfare of detainees in immigration detention facilities and safeguarding non-citizen minors in migration programs

  • Policy and regulatory frameworks to facilitate the movement of travellers and goods across our borders, supporting Australia's economy and security.

Our ideal candidate

 

The ABF is interested in receiving applications from individuals who have a broad and diverse range of backgrounds and skills. The primary role is that of District Office Supervisor, under the direction and support of an Inspector (EL1), you will lead and supervise the Geelong District Office and the Portland District Office. The secondary and supporting function is to the Small Vessel Team, when required. As the Supervisor you will deliver a range of operational outcomes. You will manage your team's goals, be adaptable to operational requirements within each section in each of their remote, complex, dynamic and sensitive environments.  

 

As a Supervisor for District Offices, you will perform all generic Border Force Supervisor (APS 6) duties required including leading, instructing, motivating, briefing, mentoring and supervising District Office Officer in the performance of their duties. This role will be performed during office hours but can continue during rostered days off and out of hours based on operational priorities and role requirements. The secondary and supporting function to the Small Vessel Team requires the same on an 'as required' basis.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

As the Supervisor of District Offices, you will be accountable and responsible for supporting the delivery of a range of activities, which may include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting and coordinating routine border activities providing day-to-day/ routine departmental functions in respect to the movement of vessels, goods, crew and passengers across the border
  • Managing day-to-day operations, providing set directions, allocating work and managing resources to ensure business needs are met within changing priorities
  • Managing staff performance, including performance assessments, monitoring and reporting attendance, coaching, mentoring and on-the-job training
  • Providing detailed technical, professional and policy advice about complex problems
  • Making real time decisions, sometimes in situations without precedent, and perform intervention activities to address non-compliance or threats to the border
  • Liaising effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including other agencies
  • Promoting and ensuring the team members behave in accordance with WHS legislation, policies, directions and reasonable instructions in relation to work health and safety.

Mandatory Core Capabilities

  • The applicant will need to have the following qualifications or demonstrate the ability to obtain and maintain these qualifications:
  • Obtain and maintain Use of Force (UoF) Operational Readiness requirements - UoF Medical, UoF Functional Fitness Assessment and Operational Safety Psychometric Assessment
  • Hold and maintain ABF Use of Force (OST) permit
  • The following First Aid Courses:
    • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • Experience working in a District Office or be able to deploy to District Offices to attain this awareness
  • Obtain and maintain an unrestricted driver's license (manual preferred)
  • Marine Awareness course
  • Maritime Vessel Search Course (MAVS)
  • Custodial Firearms Safe Handling (CFSH)
  • Authorised Arms Issuing Officer capability (AAIO)
  • Undertake specific Port/Wharf inductions
  • This is a designated ABF position, you will be a sworn officer subject to the ABF Rotation and Posting Policy and the Uniform and Appearance Standards Procedural Instruction.

  • Undertake the Basic Operators Course for ABF Vessels
  • Undertake the Variant 1 Island Class endorsement (Master/Deckhand)
  • Hold or attain an AMSA Certificate of Medical Fitness for sea duty in accordance with Marine Order 76 (Health Medical Fitness)
  • Any other qualifications or requirements to enable operational capability as determined by ABF Small Vessel Compliance
  • AMSA Certificate of Competency - Master < 24m Near Coastal or higher
  • Marine Engine Driver Grade (MED) 3 or higher
  • Remotely Operated Underwater vehicle (ROV) Operations.

Eligibility

 

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

 

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
 

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
     

In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
