The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.

The Home Affairs Graduate Program is a 12 month program where you will experience challenging and interesting work that matters. As a large agency with a broad range of opportunities, your eyes will be opened to multiple career pathway options that align to your skills and interests.

Note: If you are found suitable, but not offered a graduate position, you may be placed in a merit pool. The merit pool may be used to fill non-graduate (similar vacancy) positions in various locations across the Department.

The majority of our graduate positions are Canberra based, however the Department also offers limited regional placements in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth. You will be able to indicate your interest during the application stage.

Role requirements/qualifications:

To apply for our Graduate Program, you must meet the following eligbility criteria:

Have completed at least an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 qualification (a Bachelor Degree) equivalent, or higher equivalent by 31 December 2023
Have completed the most recent degree no more than 5 years (1 January 2019) from the date of the application being submitted.
Be an Australian Citizen

Fulfil the Department’s minimum requirements by satisfactorily answering all screening questions during the application process
Obtain and maintain the required AGSVA clearance
Obtain and maintain a current Employment Suitability Clearance
Satisfy a probation period
Undergo a health assessment (if applicable).

Prior to preparing your response it is recommended you review the Work Level Standards relevant to the classification you are applying to. It may also be useful to refer to the Integrated Leadership System information relevant to the classification. You are required to submit your application in Home Affairs' online recruitment system (ourPeople).

Evidence of Disability

Shortlisted applicants will be required to provide evidence of disability to satisfy eligibility requirements.

Assessment process:

Step 1 – online application

You must create an account to register and use our recruitment website.
Once you submit your application you will receive an email confirmation. You will also receive profile information so you can log into your account and update your personal and referee details at any time
After the closing date, you will only be able to make changes to your profile information (for example, your contact details).

Step 2 - Online assessments

First stage of online assessments will be capabilty testing, conducted via an online platform.
The second stage will be one way video interviews, this will also be conducted through an online platform.

Step 3 – Assessment Centre

Applicants who were successful in the second stage of assessments will be invited to the virtual assessment centre.
The assessment centre will include a variety of activities aimed at determining suitable applicants. These assessments may include:
- Interviews
- Written Tasks
- Group Activity
- Work Sample Tests

Stage 4 – Refeee Reports

Referee reports will be sought for those who successfully complete the assessment centre.
Referee reports are used to confirm information about your employment history, qualifications, experience and role suitability.
They also provide the selection panel with the opportunity to seek clarification on matters discussed during your assessment.
Referee’s can be a current or past supervisor, a university professor or character referee if the first two are not applicable.

Eligibility and Specific Conditions of Employment
