The Workplace Relations Section provides expert policy advice and support on workplace relations matters to support the Department of Home Affairs Enterprise Agreement 2024 – 2027 (the EA). The team is responsible for Employment Conditions, Industrial Relations, Overseas Conditions and the National Staff Consultative Forum.
The Industrial Relations (IR) team consists of departmental employees and Australian Border Force (ABF) officers, who oversee a range of IR matters across the Department and the ABF.

Our ideal candidate
- A sound understanding of contemporary industrial relations and human resources issues, including consultation and change management (or the ability to quickly get across this subject matter)
- The ability to work in a fast-paced and complex operating environment with a strong ability to managing competing priorities
- Attention to detail, out of the box thinking and a calm, considered and measured approach when dealing with and responding to sensitive matters
- Oral and written communication skills and an ability to liaise with a broad range of people
- Experience in building effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Duties and responsibilities
- Provide advice on complex industrial relations matters for both the ABF and Department, particularly as they relate to the Fair Work Act 2009 (FW Act) and the Department of Home Affairs Enterprise Agreement (EA) and associated legislation, including the development of written material and briefs
- Provide advice and support on consultation requirements and dispute matters and assist with the management of formal industrial relations matters and cases before the Fair Work Commission
- Assist with the management of the National Staff Consultative Forum (NSCF)
- Communicate with respective unions (Community and Public Sector Union and the Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers) and their workplace representatives
- Provide advice regarding right of entry requests in accordance with the FW Act.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
