About our role

As an APS5 Senior Border Force Officer in Operation AEGIS, you will play a vital role in ensuring the security and safety of Australia’s borders through leading compliance and enforcement activities. Operation AEGIS works closely with law enforcement partners, including the Australian Federal Police (AFP), to monitor and enforce visa and community safety conditions for individuals under the Bridging (Removal Pending) visa. Your leadership will be essential in guiding teams, making strategic decisions, and ensuring operational effectiveness in this high-impact role.

 

You will be part of a team dedicated to enforcing critical compliance measures related to the Bridging (Removal Pending) visa cohort, as well as community supervision orders that mandate strict behaviour and reporting protocols. With a mission-focused mindset, you will work on the ground and in coordination with key agencies, including the AFP and state and territory police, to monitor and enforce community safety standards.

This position is suited to experienced professionals with strong decision-making skills, resilience, and a commitment to upholding Australia’s border security framework in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment.

We are looking for proactive, flexible, and detail-oriented professionals who bring a strong understanding of compliance enforcement and risk management. Working in teams responsible for Electronic Monitoring and Field Operations, 24/7 National Monitoring, Investigation and Incident Reporting, Training and Capability Development or Contract and Inventory Management, our ideal candidate will:

Duties and responsibilities
 

As an APS5 Leading Border Force Officer, you will be joining one of three specialised sections within Operation AEGIS, each with unique functions supporting the overall mission. Dependent on your Section, your primary duties will include:


1. Regional Compliance and Enforcement (RCE)

  • Electronic Monitoring and Field Operations: Oversee the application, removal, and technical support for Electronic Monitoring Devices (EMDs) to monitor individuals’ compliance with behavioural conditions
  • Compliance Inspections and Risk Mitigation: Conduct field inspections and proactive compliance checks, coordinating closely with law enforcement partners to enforce visa conditions and address breaches promptly
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Establish and strengthen collaborative relationships with key agencies, including AFP and state police, to ensure cohesive enforcement efforts
  • Court Support and Documentation: Represent the ABF at court appearances, prepare reports, and provide comprehensive documentation for legal proceedings related to compliance breaches.

 

2. National Monitoring and Investigations

  • 24/7 National Monitoring: Support national compliance operations by participating in a 24/7 monitoring shift team, overseeing compliance with safety and visa conditions for high-risk individuals
  • Investigation and Incident Reporting: Identify, document, and report breaches of the Migration Act 1958, coordinating with the AFP for further action as needed
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Gather and analyse data to support operational decision-making, detect patterns of non-compliance, and contribute to the refinement of enforcement strategies
  • Community Supervision Safety: Monitor adherence to Community Supervision Safety Orders, working with internal and external stakeholders to respond swiftly to potential risks to public safety.


3. Operational Support & Electronic Monitoring Device Technical Management

  • Policy and Procedural Development: Contribute to the development and maintenance of policies, governance, and procedural frameworks that guide Operation AEGIS activities
  • Contract and Inventory Management: Assist with managing contracts, procurement, and inventory for EMDs and other operational resources to maintain readiness and efficiency
  • Training and Capability Development: Support recruitment, training, and continuous development programs for team members, ensuring they are equipped to fulfill compliance and enforcement duties
  • Quality Assurance and Risk Assessment: Conduct regular audits, quality checks, and risk assessments to ensure compliance with ABF standards and operational effectiveness.


Additional information

 

To be eligible for this role, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be an Australian citizen
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline or Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance as applicable
  • Meet and sustain medical, fitness, and psychometric standards essential for ABF operations. You will also be required to subscribe to the ABF Oath or Affirmation
  • Wear ABF uniform in accordance with dress standards (unless the position requires wearing of business attire).

 

For some roles, you will also be required to:

  • Acquire a Working with Children Check (required for specific roles)
  • Complete Operational Safety Training and willing to carry and use personal defence equipment, including a firearm, if required
  • Work outside of business hours including weekends (overtime or shift work required for some roles)
  • Certificate IV in Government Investigations (required for specific roles).

 

Additional Desirable Experience:

  • Understanding of ABF Operation AEGIS roles, responsibilities, and links throughout the ABF, the Department and broader Government
  • Familiarity with electronic monitoring and experience in fields such as compliance, investigations, detention, contract management, risk assessment, or governance is highly regarded.

Eligibility

 

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

 

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
 

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
     

In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
