Cyber & Infrastructure Security | Critical Infra Partnership & Policy |
Cyber and Infrastructure Security Group
The Cyber and Infrastructure Security Group is responsible for the coordination, strategic and operational policy, regulatory decision making, and whole of government leadership regarding cyber and critical infrastructure security. We assist government, critical asset owners, and the wider Australian community by providing robust security frameworks that enable assets to be secured from all-hazards across eleven critical sectors of the Australian economy. We work in close collaboration with industry and international partners to develop world leading legislation and best practices to facilitate an all-hazards resilience regime.
The Critical Infrastructure Partnerships and Policy provides policy advice to the Australian Government on critical infrastructure and transport security matters and manages the policy for, and the implementation of, the legislative frameworks in place under the Aviation Transport Security Act 2004, the Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003, and the Security
of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018.
Aviation Security Policy Branch
The Aviation Security Policy Branch provides policy advice and is responsible for the legislative framework set out in the Aviation Transport Security Act 2004. The branch facilitates forums and contingency planning for industry and government partners, conducts trials and supports the introduction of innovative security technology and processes, and engages with international partners (such as the International Civil Aviation Organisation) on aviation security matters.
Screening and Maritime Security Policy Branch
The Screening and Maritime Security Policy Branch provides strategic and operational policy advice on transport security screening, background screening, and maritime security for the Australian Government. The branch is responsible for setting the methods, equipment, and techniques used for screening at airports and ports across Australia, establishing security settings that protect ports from unlawful interference, setting policies related to background screening for people accessing airports, ports, and critical infrastructure facilities. The branch also supports capability building activities in South East Asia through several posted officers and deliver pathways to fund critical infrastructure, background checking and transport security activities.
Critical Infrastructure Security Policy Branch
The Critical Infrastructure Security Policy Branch is responsible for leading critical infrastructure policy issues on behalf of the Australian Government. This includes the administration of the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2017 and delivering the Critical Infrastructure Resilience Strategy. It also leads engagement critical infrastructure partners through the Trusted Information Sharing Network, and international engagement through multilateral and bilateral exchanges including the Critical 5.
Systems of National Significance Branch
The Systems of National Significance (SoNS) Branch is responsible for the implementation and delivery of the SoNS framework, including the enhanced cyber security obligations, for the Australian Government. The SoNS team works in partnership with other government agencies, including states and territories, and industry to uplift and enhance the cyber resilience of SoNS.

Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft a range of documentation.

Ability to learn and work with the Aviation Transport Security Act 2004, Maritime Transport and Offshore Facilities Security Act 2003, Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018, AusCheck Act 2007, Cyber Security Act 2024, and subordinate legislation.

Stakeholder engagement skills to achieve administrative, policy, and operational outcomes that align with Australian Government and Departmental objectives.
Duties and responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities will be dependent on the branch and section that successful applicants are placed into, but broadly the duties and responsibilities of an APS6 Senior Policy Officer are:

Manage and contribute to strategic, operational, and administrative policy decisions to maintain and improve Australia's cyber and critical infrastructure security frameworks.

Lead the development of legislative, regulatory, policy, and administrative reforms to Australia's cyber and critical infrastructure security frameworks

Manage and lead projects and programmes to strengthening Australia's cyber and critical infrastructure security frameworks

Liaise with industry participants to ensure legislative changes are designed and implemented correctly, whilst building strong relationships that can be called upon when required

Develop industry guidance documents to facilitate positive compliance outcomes

Coordinate workshops, meetings and stakeholder forums including secretariat duties.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
