About our team

Immigration | Citizenship Humanitarian Fvp & Supp | Immi Operations & Performance | Overseas Immigration Management

Overseas Immigration Management Section (OIM) in Immigration Programs supports the overseas immigration network. From time to time, it is necessary for officers to undertake Short Term Missions (STMs) to support overseas network by:

  • Relieving overseas Australia-based (A-based) officers when on leave or absent from post
  • Providing additional A-based support at posts during peak processing periods
  • Assisting with international cooperation and capacity building
  • Assisting in times of Whole of Government (WofG) emergency, critical event or urgent direction from Government or during exceptional circumstances.

Please Note: This EOI is not intended to source candidates for ABF deployments such as Airline Liaison Officers (ALOs) or Regional Processing Centre (RPC) related work but is aimed specifically for STMs across the overseas network delivering immigration and visa programs.

What you’ll do

The nature of the work varies from post to post and in accordance with the situation. However, in undertaking an Immigration STM you can expect to perform duties similar to A-based Immigration staff, including:

  • Assess and decide visa applications, undertake visa cancellations, prepare detailed written visa refusal decisions
  • Support visa integrity related activities, conduct visa related client interviews and site visits
  • Lead, train and support locally engaged staff on visa decision making
  • Examine visa processing work practices and introduce business improvements
  • Use departmental systems including ICSE and WMAN
  • Liaise with other agencies and host governments on immigration and visa matters, and represent Home Affairs and the Australian Government overseas.

Skills and capabilty we need

It is essential for applicants to:

  • Have recent visa processing / decision making experience under the Migration Act 1958 and the Migration Regulations 1994, either in Australia or overseas; and/or
  • Relevant international engagement or capacity building experience
  • Be able to 'hit the ground running' and deliver key immigration and humanitarian visa priorities
  • Be flexible in their ability to travel overseas, often at short notice
  • Be available to work overseas for a period - up to 12 months, but generally not exceeding 6 months
  • Prior overseas posting or STM experience is desirable.

Note: STM deployments are unaccompanied opportunities (ie the Department cannot fund nor arrange for family members to accompany the officer on the STM). Applicants should ensure family commitments are able to be covered during deployment periods.

If you are applying to be considered for crisis response activities only, and your supervisor's approval for release only relates to your involvement in a crisis response deployment, please document this in the notes field of your EOI application.

For crisis response deployments, one or more of the following are highly desirable:

  • Document Examination Training
  • Experience in collecting biometrics using a mobile kit
  • Cohort/crowd management (especially in the immigration detention/offshore processing context)
  • Border clearance experience
  • Foreign language skills

What you’ll gain from the experience

  • Gain experience or extend your skills in the overseas Immigration environment
  • Extend your skills and experience in a challenging and engaging environment
  • Undertake duties that are unique to the overseas network
  • Build relationships and networks outside your usual work situation
  • Engage with other Australian Government agencies and overseas stakeholders.

Additional Information

Consideration of applicants to be offered a STM or crisis response deployment will be based on details provided in the one page pitch, your attached CV and the additional questions you will be required to answer in this application process.

Additional information can be provided in the applicant response but should be limited to additional information that can't be provided elsewhere such as:

  • Copy of Section / Branch Head approval for your release
  • Copy of previous End of Post reports (if you have completed an overseas posting in the last 4 years)
  • List the names of two referees and contact details (at least one referee should be able to provide feedback on your visa processing experience).

If you have submitted your expression of interest (EOI) in previous years and you remain interested in undertaking a STM, you are required to resubmit your EOI in ourPeople as this is a new registration period. For those interested in deployment as part of crisis action responses only, please document this in the notes field of the EOI application.

Candidates should be aware that there is no guarantee that STM positions will become available during the validity of the merit list developed from this EOI. The number of available STMs can vary significantly during the year due to a range of factors, depending on world events and budget considerations.
