The Australian Border Force (ABF) is seeking talented and resilient professionals who are dedicated and accomplished leaders to join East Commands Team. Applicants will be passionate about the ABF's mission to protect Australia's border through enabling legitimate trade and travel, as well as through enforcement activities.
The East Command, incorporating NSW and the ACT (operationally), processes the highest volumes of travellers and goods across the Australian border.
We are looking for a self-motivated leader who can inspire and guide their team in a complex and fast-paced operational environment; leaders who have strong leadership in building positive culture and high-level communication skills; and leaders who can understand and respond to the competing priorities that arise within the region.
East Command has responsibility for the operational delivery of a diverse and interesting work areas including:
Travel East
- Aviation Traveller NSW is responsible for managing border risks related to the movement of people in the aviation environment
- Maritime Operations NSW is responsible for managing border risks related to the movement of people and goods in the maritime environment in NSW
- Border Clearance ACT is responsible for managing risks and threats related to the movement of people and goods in the aviation and cargo space, whilst also being the central ABF contact for enquiries made by the diplomatic community
- Operations and Planning NSW provides operational planning and tactical resourcing support to ABF East Command, including management of the casual workforce. The section also links with law enforcement partners who require operational assistance outside of BAU processes. The Supply Chain Integrity Team focusses on the industry who work with goods under customs control, including trusted insiders.
Chief of Staff (CoS) East NSW
- Responsible for providing workforce support and facilitating corporate governance arrangements, managing engagements and visits to the Region, organising local events and ceremonies, and coordinating training needs.
Trade East
- Aviation Goods NSW is responsible for the end-to-end process and oversight of all air cargo and some sea cargo of interest to the ABF imported or exported through Sydney
- Container Examination Facility (CEF) and Detained Goods Management (DGM) NSW:
- CEF is responsible for the inspection and examination of imported and exported sea cargo
- DGM is responsible for the security, storage and accountability of detained goods delivered via bond runs from various ABF locations
- International Mail NSW conducts screening, examination and intervention activities to facilitate the clearance of legitimate mail, while preventing the import or export of prohibited or restricted items
- Border Intelligence NSW (Specialist positions) supports operational ABF partners in identifying and addressing border threat
- Investigations NSW (Specialist positions) is responsible for providing specialist investigation and enforcement capabilities to detect, disrupt and treat complex border crime and systemic vulnerabilities in the trade and migration systems.

Duties and responsibilities
As an ABF Superintendent, you will operate within a command, control and co-ordination model, escalating significant issues as they arise through established reporting protocols. You will perform an important leadership role, exercising a significant degree of autonomy in managing a team to deliver on a range of strategic priorities. You will work under the broad direction of a Commander (Senior Executive Services Band 1), delivering programmes in a highly complex, sensitive and at times high risk operational environment.
An EL2 Superintendent would generally be required to:

- Experience in stakeholder engagement and outreach and strong oral and written communications skills
- Strong leadership skills with demonstrated experience in leading and managing large teams through change
- A high level of personal integrity and demonstrated capacity to achieve outcomes and lead and implement change in a high tempo, operational environment
- Autonomy in complex decision-making and responsiveness, including ability to exercise sound judgement and discretion, and work quickly and independently (sometimes with limited information) to problem solve and resolve sensitive issues
- Create and sustain a productive work environment where staff are valued, supported and well-trained
- Demonstrate experience to lead and manage a large team to deliver outcomes in a high-tempo work environment.
This position requires the candidate to meet the following requirements:
- Obtain and maintain essential and role-specific qualifications
- Maintain dress and appearance standards according to the Department's uniform policy
- Swear an oath or make an affirmation into the ABF (not required for Border Intelligence)
- Actively participate in career management (postings and deployments) (not required for Border Intelligence)

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
