The Parliamentary Section supports the Home Affairs portfolio's parliamentary processes, including Senate Estimates, Questions on Notice, Question Time Briefs, submissions, Parliamentary Inquiries, and tabling documents. It monitors Parliamentary business and provides support to the department, portfolio, and Ministers' offices. A role in the Parliamentary Section offers you a unique insight into the workings of Parliament, providing deeper understanding of how the department and wider portfolio contribute to the Government's priorities and help achieve its key objectives.

 

The Cabinet Liaison Office (CLO) coordinates all cabinet matters, supporting the department, portfolio, Ministers' offices, and other agencies. It assists in forecasting and preparing departmental submissions and memoranda, liaising with stakeholders to track progress against milestones. The CLO offers the opportunity for staff to be exposed to key Government business, including on high profile, contentious matters and an invaluable insight into the decision-making process of the Cabinet and its committees.

Duties and responsibilities

 

Under limited direction and in accordance with standard operating processes, officers are expected to undertake the following duties:

 

  • Facilitate, manage, review and distribute the development and lodgement of cabinet submissions and papers, ensuring they meet cabinet requirements.
  • Coordinate high quality briefing for our ministers, Secretary and other Government Officials, on items of consideration at meetings of the Cabinet and its committees.
  • Oversee the monitoring, allocation and quality assurance of Parliamentary products such as Parliamentary Questions on Notice (PQoNs), Question Time Briefs (QTBs), Parliamentary Inquiry Recommendations and Documents tabled in Parliament.
  • Work proactively and liaise with all areas of the Home Affairs portfolio, including Ministers' Offices and the Senior Executive.

Please note that due to the nature of the role in in the Cabinet Liaison Office, some out-of-hours and rostered weekend work is required. Successful applicants appointed to a designated Cabinet Liaison Officer position will be eligible to an annual allowance of $24,369.

Eligibility

 

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

 

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
 

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
     

In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
