Irregular and Intermittent Employees (IIEs/Casual) are employed at APS Level 2 and play an important role in supporting the operational and administrative functions of the Australian Border Force (ABF).
The role contributes to the ABF's mission of protecting Australia's border by undertaking tasks that support frontline operations. IIEs/Casual are required to work at international airports as well as other work areas such as Melbourne Gateway Facility (Post), Air Cargo, Container Examination Area (CEF) and Shipping Operations.

Our ideal candidate
the ABF is currently looking for flexible, adaptable and reliable people to undertake work on a casual basis at the APS2 classification.
The ABF is interested in receiving applications from individuals who have a broad and diverse range of backgrounds and skills. You should be an inclusive team member who is focused on contributing to a proactive and productive workplace culture.
You will be given the necessary training, to perform work related functions such as passenger and cargo clearances. Training is approximately four weeks in duration and is undertaken on a full-time basis. Please note you must be flexible and available to attend training for the full course.
Duties and responsibilities
International Airports
Specific Duties/Responsibilities:
- Processing Passengers and Crew. Provide support for all arrivals clearance processes and departing flight crew.
- Facilitate the processing of red and green zone arriving passengers at international airports.
- Airport ABF front counters: Respond to a variety of inquiries and perform a range of general supporting tasks including identification verification and issuing visitor passes.
- Provide administrative support in clearing people, goods, carriers and immigration functions.
- Direct travellers and manage queues-including roaming officer and Traveller Assist (e-Gates)
- Surge requirements where required in processing Tourist Refund Scheme claims, both locally and overflow from other ports during peak.
Other Work areas
Specific Duties/Responsibilities:
- Answer client and stakeholder enquiries within the cargo environment.
- Release mail via the postal enquiries database
- Assist as a witness, Assistant Officer in stocktakes, bond runs, sourcing goods identified for destruction purposes, transfer of prohibited/restricted goods to Detained Goods
- Escort the exporter and goods to the check-in counter at the international port of departure and ensure goods have been checked in
- Manage the storage of received goods and maintain registers
- Respond to counter enquiries and perform a range of general supporting tasks
- Process cruise ship passengers-inwards and outwards (clearance only, onshore)
- Process Tourist Refund Scheme claims
- Assist with storage, transfer and disposal of prohibited imports and release of restricted goods in accordance with import permits (under direction).
Additional information
Shifts are offered on a casual, and intermittent basis, sometimes at short notice and include attendance within standard business hours, early morning, evening, weekend and public holidays. Successful applicants will have the ability to regularly and flexibly commute to ABF sites within their locale as needed.
These roles are frontline roles which require officers to wear the ABF uniform and represent the ABF professionally in the public domain. Officers must be capable of interacting with members of the community and foreign visitors.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
