GM Technology & Major Cap Group | ICT Division | Traveller Cargo & Trade Systems | Cargo and Trade Systems
The Cargo and Trade Systems Section is responsible for providing technical support for a range of midrange applications and databases and asses the need for new related project work to address and migrate unsupported and/or legacy systems onto modern platforms. The Section also manages configuration, change coordination and provides automated testing and continuous release management support for ICS and all Cargo and Trade related systems.

Our ideal candidate
The Department is looking for software developers who enjoy supporting software applications that have been built with a variety of languages and technology stacks. The candidates will be able to quickly understand how existing applications have been built by browsing source code, accessing system documentation, and engaging with other developers in the support team.
The position holders will be comfortable with navigating various source code and document repositories and will have experience with migration of legacy code and build processes. To achieve intended outcomes the position holders will be required to work collaboratively within a team environment, engaging effectively with business areas and other relevant internal and external stakeholders. The holders may be required to mentor IT graduates, cadets and apprentices through help and support in learning business system development and using our technology platforms.
Strong skills in Java and the ability to easily learn and use a variety of languages is essential to this role. Additionally, a sound understanding of Software Development Life Cycle processes will be required to provide quality support and maintenance of systems and applications.
Duties and responsibilities
The successful candidates will provide technical assistance to various systems and applications, maintain professional knowledge and continue to develop knowledge and expertise in application development.
Whilst working in the Department you will be exposed to cutting edge technology as well as training resources that can fast track your professional development. This will allow you to excel within and outside of the Department. The successful candidates will be self-driven and seek to directly influence the key outcomes of the organisation.
Additional information
Mandatory:
- Translate business requirements into functional and technical specifications
- Experience in developing and maintaining large IT solutions
- Good problem solving skills and the ability to diagnose problems and weaknesses in existing solutions
- Develop business applications for deployment using a standard system development lifecycle (analysis, design, building, testing, and implementation) methodology.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
