The Evolved Cape Class Patrol Boat Project Section and the Leased Vessel and Small Hulls Project Section are integral parts of the Civil Maritime Capability Acquisition and Transitions Branch (CMCATB) in the Civil Maritime Capability Division.
The Civil Maritime Capability Acquisition and Transition Branch manages the delivery of the Civil Maritime Capability projects from inception to transition into service.
Both sections consist of various disciplines (including engineering, project and contract management, commercial, logistics, and corporate enabling services). Operating in a complex, challenging and changing environment, characterised by a continual high tempo of activity in the delivery of capability to the Australian Border Force (ABF).
Projects often include high risk, high value (HRHV) strategic procurement in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The projects are often time critical and may be subject to change with operational imperatives and Government priorities.

Our ideal candidate
- CEng with Royal Institution of Naval Architects or equivalent.
- Experience as an engineer in maritime projects, with a good understanding of Class Society Requirements.
- Experience in the preparation of inspection and / or audit reports.
- Experience communicating and articulating technical subject matter to non-technical management forums.
- Strong theoretical and practical assessment / analysis skills.
Duties and responsibilities
- Provide acquisition engineering advice regarding capability and systems on ABF Vessels.
- Lead or participate in Marine Engineer capability development activities as a subject matter expert.
- Lead Marine Engineer capability lifecycle activities such as Engineer change proposals, future capability requirements and improving the capability of existing platforms.
- Understand and translate the Classification Society Requirements in order to meet AMSA, and Legislative and Regulatory requirements.
- Provide ongoing supervisory responsibility for junior and/or graduate Engineers and/or technical staff.
Additional information
Our successful candidate will:
- Hold a Maritime Engineering Qualification from an Australian Institution; or a professional qualification gained elsewhere that satisfies Australian engineering professional requirements.
- Have the tertiary qualifications and professional development sufficient to attain recognition as a Chartered Engineer in a relevant engineering stream with IMarEST, Engineers Australia or other recognised professional society, or
- Have qualifications and experience sufficient to attain an Engineer Class 1 qualification issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
- Have significant, relevant experience in vessel design, operation or maintenance within a quality framework (or other relevant experience).
- Significant experience acting in a senior engineering role.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
