District Offices (DOs) are an important part of Australian Border Force (ABF) capability and ensure that there is an ABF presence across Australia with an ability to respond to border threats in regional areas.
Thursday Island, colloquially known as TI, is an island of the Torres Strait Islands, an archipelago of at least 274 small islands in the Torres Strait. TI is located approximately 39 kilometres north of Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland.
ABF officers working in the Thursday Island District Office (TI DO) enhance and implement national border protection strategies by working cooperatively within the community and with partner agencies, on a range of issues including customs, immigration, biosecurity, fisheries, police, industry, foreign affairs and trade, revenue collection, health and the environment. They engage with local community, law enforcement partners.

Our ideal candidate
The Inspector, Torres Strait will lead a team of up to 25 staff in a unique and complex operating environment, working cooperatively within the community and with partner agencies.
The successful candidate will have the ability to work autonomously, prioritising and managing tasks to meet conflicting deadlines, within a fast paced, high pressure environment. They will have a high level of political astuteness and an ability to inform strategic thinking.
They will have excellent leadership skills, strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively engage with First Nations people individually and in group settings.
Our ideal candidate will be a highly effective communicator with an ability to build and sustain relationships and manage teams, including monitoring workloads and providing guidance and support. They will possess high-ethical standards and maintain confidentiality and discretion within an operational environment.

Additional information
Some positions within the Australian Border Force require the occupant to meet Border Force Officer essential qualifications. If successful, candidates are required to:
- Attain and maintain relevant medical, fitness and psychometric standards
- Swear an oath or make an affirmation
- Actively participate in career management (postings and deployments)
- Be uniformed (unless business attire is required)
- Obtain and maintain a valid Australian drivers licence
- Obtain and maintain essential and role-specific qualifications.
- Participate in career management.
You may need to:
- Deploy at short notice
- Acquire a Working with Children Check
- Complete Operational Safety training and use personal defence equipment
- Work outside of business hours, including weekends.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
