Immigration Compliance | Immigration Compliance Operations | Field Ops & Sponsor Monitoring 

 

Field Operations and Sponsor Monitoring (FOSM) branch brings together ABF's field compliance and sponsor monitoring functions into an enduring immigration integrity operational capability; safely and lawfully strengthening the integrity of Australia's migration system.

 

Field Operations Leading Border Force Officers conduct enforcement action to prevent, detect, deter and enforce breaches of migration law. They locate and detain UNCs who are identified as a risk to the safety of the community or who pose a threat to the integrity of Australia's visa system. They promote employer compliance with their obligations under the Migration Act through employer awareness visits and targeted compliance activities.”

 

Through standing and responsive operations and regulatory activities, FOSM monitors and enforces immigration compliance with visa conditions, employer (and labourhire intermediary) obligations under the Migration Act 1958 when employing or referring migrant workers to work, and sponsorship of migrant workers under the employer sanctions framework. 

 

Within a compliance continuum focused on prevention, compliance and enforcement addressing: (1)community protection (2) combatting migrant worker exploitation and (3) protecting the integrity of the migration system.

Duties and responsibilities

 

  • Interpret and apply legislation and powers under the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) to support immigration compliance 
  • Conduct investigations and activities to locate, engage, grant bridging visa or detain unlawful non-citizens (UNCs)
  • Manage the referral of UNCs located in the prison and remand systems, including the administrative preparations for and deployment to correctional centres and similar locations to engage with the UNC
  • Under the direction of a supervisor, exercise delegations and statutory powers under the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) to detain UNCs and grant, cancel or refuse visas
  • Assess and mitigate risk associated with field deployments utilising a risk matrix and various tools, powers and policy.

Some positions within the Australian Border Force require the occupant to meet Border Force Officer essential qualifications. If successful, candidates are required to:

 

  • Attain and maintain relevant medical, fitness and psychometric standardsSwear an oath or make an affirmation
  • Actively participate in career management (postings and deployments)
  • Be uniformed
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Australian drivers licence
  • Obtain and maintain essential and role-specific qualifications.
  • Work outside standard hours, undertake regional and interstate travel, or provide on-call services.
  • Ability to undertake domestic travel for training or other reasons for 1 month+ at a time
  • Some positions may be required to hold or obtain a Use of Force permit. 

 

Mandatory requirements

 

  • Obtain and maintain Working With Children Check, and/or vulnerable persons check as applicable
  • Obtain and maintain First Aid Certificate.

Eligibility

 

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

 

​The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
 

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.

 
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
