The Removal Operations Branch delivers Australia's immigration removal program, coordinating the removal of unlawful non-citizens in accordance with the Migration Act 1958.
Our teams operate across Australia (New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia) and work closely with government, law enforcement and international partners to deliver operational outcomes. Our ideal candidate
Our ideal candidates are proactive, adaptable, and results-focused. They will work effectively in dynamic environments, exercise sound judgement, and quickly develop expertise in the legislation and policies governing removal operations. APS5 Removal Officers plan and conduct removal operations, with moderate to high risk, including all involuntary removals, in accordance with established procedures, and in partnership with relevant internal and external agencies. They work under limited supervision to conduct assessments to determine the status of unlawful non-citizens and requirements for their removal. They also support broader ABF and Departmental priorities, including whole-of-government responses to illegal foreign fishing and Operation Sovereign Borders.
Duties and responsibilities
- Interpret and apply legislation, policy, and powers to support immigration compliance including:
- Demonstrate an understanding of, and be able to apply, delegations and powers as appropriate
- Identify and use appropriate legislative powers to perform enforcement actions
- Demonstrate an understanding of, and be able to apply, delegations and powers as appropriate
- Plan moderate to high risk and moderate to complex removal activities such as:
- Engage with removees and brief them regarding the removal process, and their immigration pathway
- Liaise with relevant internal and external stakeholders to obtain travel documents for removees, as required
- Identify viable removal pathways, airlines and transits whilst ensuring compliance with aviation regulations, removals policy, visa requirements and relevant border transit authorities

- Contribute to and conduct removal activities including:
- Participating in removal briefings for planned operations and oversee operations at airports
- Providing updates regarding the status of removal activities to relevant departmental stakeholders to inform operational awareness and situational reporting

- Lead removal teams
- Assess removal availability
- Assess removal referrals from relevant departmental business areas
- Conduct Detention Client Interviews (DCI) to obtain specific information regarding removee's to support removal planning
- Mentor and develop less experienced team members to enhance competence and proficiency
- Provide advice to support assessment of removal eligibility and the planning and conduct of removal activities.
Additional information
- A Minimum of Baseline (Protected) AGSVA security clearance, some positions may require a higher level of security clearance
- Attainment and maintenance of role-specific qualifications
- Occupants of the role may be required to:
- Work outside standard hours, on shift work, or provide 'on-call' services
- Represent the Department at external forums
- Hold a current Aviation Security Identity Card (ASIC)
- Hold a current driver's licence
- Hold a current Working with Children Check
- Hold operational readiness qualifications.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
