Chief Operating Officer Group | Strategy Digital & Data | Architecture Design & Security | Technology and Security Architecture

 

The Architecture, Design and Security (ADS) Branch is located within the Strategy, Digital and Data Division and is responsible for setting the strategic architecture direction for the Department, enabling alignment between long-term strategies, feasibility and business needs. The ADS Branch works closely with business units and other stakeholders to provide guidance and support architecture design, delivery, governance and sustainment decisions.

The Technology and Security Architecture section operates within the broader context of the ADS Branch, defines and guides the Department's core technology and security foundations.

The section sets architecture strategies, roadmaps, design direction, decision support and governance for core technology platforms, IT infrastructure and cyber security; ensuring technology is secure, aligned with business outcomes, and built for agility and long-term value. The section drives strategic planning, defines the enterprise target state, and enables informed investment decisions.

The Technology Architecture defines the foundational and enabling technology capabilities that support business IT systems across the Department. This includes infrastructure (facilities, compute, storage, network), middleware, databases, software development and deployment platforms, and collaboration platforms. Security Architecture guides and supports the organisation in right-sizing cyber security and embedding fit-for-purpose security protection into all systems.

Our ideal candidate

 

We are seeking a dynamic, passionate and determined technology architecture professional with a strong record for IT infrastructure and/or security design outcomes who has:

  • Experience in designing the IT infrastructure capabilities and integration technologies.
  • Ability to develop solution design artefacts aligned to business outcomes.
  • Ability to engage with a range of stakeholders and communicate design concerns in a language understood by all stakeholders - verbally, visually and in writing.
  • Ability to assess alternative architectures and the trade-offs in cost, performance, security, and scalability.
  • Collaborate with Business, ICT Teams, architects, and project team members to ensure timely delivery of technology architecture services and ensure architectural governance.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 

The APS6 Technology Architect will be responsible for the following:

  • Under guidance from senior Technology Architect, contributing to the development of IT infrastructure solution designs) and timely review of appropriate documents as required.
  • Providing advice on technical aspects of solution and platform development and integration to ensure that relevant technical strategies, policies, standards, and governance are applied correctly.
  • Supporting changes to required service, process, organisation, operating model, and other aspects in addition to technology components and demonstrates how solutions meet agreed business requirements with an architect focus.
  • Under guidance, consulting with delivery areas to understand their infrastructure technology needs, analyse emerging technologies, develop options, and develop relevant documents.
  • Collaborating with team members, model continuous learning, apply best practice and contribute to improve architecture process and frameworks.

 

Additional information

Our successful candidate will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline or field is required.
  • Experience in one or more on-premises and cloud ICT Infrastructure domain (compute, storage, network, and enabling platforms).
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more technologies such as Microsoft 365, Collaboration platforms such as MS Teams, Contact Centre solutions, developer frameworks and End user computing design in MoEs and Windows 11 is desirable.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Research, analysis and documentation skills.

Eligibility

 

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

 

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
 

  • ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
  • Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
     

In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
