National Emergency Management Agency:
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was established on 1 September 2022 as a single, accountable Commonwealth authority that delivers a whole-of-nation approach to reducing disaster risk, planning, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from all hazards across the emergency management continuum.
 
Overview of the Section:
The Technology Section at NEMA is a dynamic and innovative team responsible for driving technological advancements and ensuring robust cyber security. This section plays a crucial role in enhancing NEMA's digital capabilities and service delivery through the development of business led technology solutions, managing IT projects, and providing specialist services. The team is dedicated to fostering collaboration, improving IT service delivery and supporting the agency's strategic objectives.
 
The section is also responsible for delivering on NEMA’s Technology Strategy 2024-26. This strategy emphasises the importance of leveraging fit-for-purpose technology and innovation to deliver efficient and effective business outcomes across the emergency management continuum. It aims to improve the employee experience while delivering secure services across the agency.

The Technology Section is responsible for delivering this strategy by:
 

  • Partnering with business to ideate and develop new technology solutions, managing the Technology Innovation Hub, and conducting ICT research to identify appropriate solutions
  • Implementing measures to mature NEMA’s information and cyber security posture, providing security advice, supporting incident response, and delivering Australian Security Governance requirements
  • Providing proactive support and services to NEMA staff, monitoring service levels and continuously improving service delivery
  • Overseeing the lifecycle of IT projects from concept to implementation, ensuring alignment with NEMA’s strategic objectives, and managing project governance
  • Delivering specialist services such as IT architecture, service design, and IT change management.

 
By continuously enhancing collaboration, communication, and information exchange, the Technology Section ensures that NEMA remains a leading technology-enabled agency in emergency management.
 
About the role:
NEMA is seeking highly motivated and skilled individuals to join our Technology Section at the EL1 Assistant Director level. This round will create a merit pool that will be used to fill current and upcoming vacancies within the Technology Section, which is responsible for a range of critical functions/streams including Technology Innovation, Cyber Security, IT Service Delivery, IT Projects and Specialist Services. 
 
Our ideal candidate:
The ideal candidate for an Assistant Director role within the Technology Section has a proven record of accomplishment as a leader and possesses a good understanding of technology, projects, and/or cyber security in a customer centric environment. They should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and build relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
 
Specific duties/responsibilities:
Technology Innovation

  • Partner with business units to ideate and develop innovative technology solutions
  • Manage the Technology Innovation Hub
  • Conduct ICT research to identify appropriate solutions
  • Facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders.

 

Cyber Security

  • Implement measures to mature NEMA’s information and cyber security posture and culture, including developing relevant policies, guidance and procedures
  • Provide security advice and raise cyber awareness for all NEMA staff
  • Support incident response and recovery processes
  • Provide security advice and recommendations to the Agency’s executive
  • Provide expertise and support for the delivery of Australian Security Governance requirements.

 

IT Service Delivery

  • Provide proactive support and services to NEMA staff
  • Monitor and ensure service levels for NEMA staff
  • Offer Premium On-boarding and Priority Assistance
  • Collect feedback and continuously improve service delivery for staff.

 

IT Projects

  • Oversee the lifecycle of IT major and minor projects from concept to implementation
  • Ensure alignment with NEMA’s strategic objectives
  • Manage project governance and decision points
  • Coordinate with business owners and external suppliers.

 

Specialist Services

  • IT Architecture
  • Service Design: Develop and implement service design principles
  • IT Change Management.

 
This role may also be responsible for leading and managing a team of dedicated professionals, fostering an inclusive and productive work environment and driving team performance to achieve strategic goals. It may also require you to develop team members through ongoing training and mentorship, ensuring that their skills and capabilities are continuously enhanced. Role requirements/qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the key responsibility areas is mandatory
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Relevant qualifications in Information Technology, Cyber Security, or a related field is desirable
  • Implement and support agile delivery methodologies to enhance project efficiency and adaptability.
